The first ever concert in St Mawes Memorial Hall presented by Roseland Music Society was a box office success with about 130 locals in attendance. . Launching the new season Howard Shelley MBE (piano) with Jackie Shave (violin) Kath Shave (violin), Michael Posner (viola) and Julia Desbruslais (the latter two both Trustees of the Society) gave a magnificent programme of Piano Concerti by Haydn and Mozart and the celebrated Piano Quintet by Robert Schumann (written for his wife Clara Schumann).
It does seem remarkable that the Society has been going for 25 years and has not before used the Memorial Hall. The concert was supported by the St Mawes Hotel - who hosted a pre-concert supper, and the Idle Rocks Hotel. we plan to return next year to the village with the programming
Howard Shelley introduced the music in an informal, informative and witty introductions - putting the music in context - reminding us that Haydn had left home for Vienna at the age of 6 and struggled in his early years to get employment, Mozart's genius had the support of a pushy father Leopold who made the child prodigy an international sensation before he was 12.
The Society's new grand piano (with funds raised by public subscription this year) sounded warm and perfectly attuned to the acoustic at St Mawes Memorial Hall in its first vist to the village.
Many new members signed up for the RMS new season membership at the concert and we are hoping the St Mawes community will engage with the concerts which take place in Gerrans Memorial Hall and St Just in Roseland before Christmas This is £18 for the membership which gives the Society the confidence to book the musicians for the season and also provides a discount on member tickets to the 7 concerts each season.
If you want to support the Society either as an occasional attender or as a regular you are invited to join the Society - this allows us to communicate with you and also supports the viability of inviting musicians of this calbre to perform in our community.
The next concert features the Renard Ensemble - composed of members who are now the principals of two BBC orchestras - playing in what should be an exciting and entertainin woodwind ensemble concert. Don't miss it. This type of programming is rare in Cornwall (where strings and brass are far more often heard!)
